Lakeville Area Schools communicates in a variety of ways when school, programs and activities may be closed, delayed and/or dismissed early by the Superintendent in the event of extreme weather conditions.

As a general rule, schools will be canceled or delayed if the air temperature is -25 degrees Fahrenheit or colder or the wind chill is -35 degrees Fahrenheit or colder.

Day-of-school weather decisions will be announced by 6 a.m. Decisions regarding evening Community Education programs, co-curricular sports and activities and facility use by community groups will be determined by 1 p.m. and communicated as early as possible.

Parents should be sure children dress appropriately for the weather during these exceptionally cold days. Note that when adverse weather conditions exist, buses may run late. Parents are advised to make plans for the care of their children in the event of a school closing, late start or early dismissal.

We know that closing schools can be disruptive, especially for working families. Student and staff safety is our primary concern. Ultimately, the decision to send children to school remains with families. Parents/guardians wishing to keep their children home if they feel weather conditions are unsafe should report the absence to their school so it may be considered as excused. Lakeville Area Schools supports those decisions that are made for the safety and health of students. There are no negative consequences, and our schools work with families to assure that work is made up when an absence is safety-related.

Flex Days

After the first “snow day” of the school year, the Superintendent may call a Flexible Learning Day (Flex Day) for K-12 students and early childhood special education students. On Flex Days, students will continue to learn from home by completing online or offline assignments given by their teachers. New this school year, in addition to independent work time, schools will be piloting Webex meetings with students to allow for interactive time.
