School Closures and FLEX Days

The superintendent may close or delay school, activities and/or programs when the weather is bad or driving conditions are unsafe, or in the event of an emergency. The first day of the school year when school buildings are closed due to bad weather or driving conditions will always be treated as a traditional "snow day," where there is no school in person or online. Any days that school buildings are closed after the first snow day will be Flexible Learning Days (Flex Days), with K-12 students learning from home by connecting with their teachers and peers via Webex, and completing assignments given by their teachers. If school is closed due to an emergency, a Flex Day will also be implemented. The superintendent can call up to five Flex Days in a school year, per the Minnesota Department of Education. Flex Days allow for continued learning even when school is closed due to the weather, and they make it less likely that the district will have to schedule make-up days later in the school year.
On Flex Days, Lakeville Online Academy students are expected to continue their online coursework as usual.
*During the 2023-24 school year, Lakeville Area Schools will be piloting a Flex Day experience that involves more opportunities for live interactions between students and teachers using WebEx, in addition to independent work.
What should students do on Flex Days?

Elementary Students Schedule and Directions (K-5)
Elementary Students (K-5)
Students will begin their day with 2 hours of independent work time. They can use this time to work on homework or their choice card. Students will be able to contact their teacher via email or Seesaw to receive support during this time.
Once the 2 hour independent work time is over, students will participate in a 30-minute Morning Meeting with their class on Webex.
- The Webex meeting will be held two hours after the normal school start time.
- Students should join the Webex meeting using their district-issued iPad. on how to help your child join a Webex meeting.
- During the meeting, students will check in with their class, talk about their Choice Cards and Seesaw learning activities for the day.
- After the Morning Meeting, students should work to complete one activity from each cateogry on their Choice Cards and Seesaw learning activities assigned by their teacher.
Teachers will post assignments and instructions by the time the Webex Morning meeting starts (two hours later than the normal school start time).
Teachers will be available via email and Seesaw messaging during normal school hours, including the first two hours of the day. If a staff member is not available during a FLEX Day due to illness or a personal day, the teacher will post a message on Seesaw to notify students and families of their absence.
Attendance will be taken during the Morning Meeting or through the completion of a Seesaw activity before the end of the school day.

Secondary Student Schedule and Directions (Grades 6-12)
Secondary
Middle and high school students will begin the day with two hours of independent work time. They can use this time to complete homework or work ahead on assignments. Students will be able to contact their teacher via email or Schoology to recieve support during this time.
Teachers will post all assignments and instructions for the day by the end of the two-hour independent work time.
Beginning two hours after the regular school start time, students will participate in a condensed daily schedule.
- Students will begin each class period by attending a brief Webex meeting using their district-issued iPads. on how to help your child join a Webex meeting.
- During this meeting, teachers will review and assign class work.
- Students will spend the rest of their class period completing any work for that class, which will be listed in Schoology.
- Teachers will be available via email, Schoology and Webex throughout the class period to provide help and support to students if needed.
Attendance will be taken during each class period during the Webex Meeting or through the completion of a Schoology activity before the end of the school day.
