Bilingual and Multilingual Seals and Certificates

  • Minnesota has a system that allows students in grades 11 and 12 to be recognized and potentially earn college credit for their proficiency in world languages. These students can earn Bilingual and Multilingual Seals and/or Minnesota World Language Proficiency Certificates by demonstrating the required levels of language proficiency through assessments that test their knowledge and use of languages other than English. The will test a student's listening, reading, speaking and writing in world languages.

The Bilingual and Multilingual Seals and World Language Certificates are awarded to high school students meeting the required levels of language proficiency upon graduating. Minnesota State Colleges and Universities award the following college credits:

    • World Language Proficiency Certificate - 2 semester credits
    • Gold Seal - 3 semester credits
    • Platinum Seal - 4 semester credits
