In accordance with Minnesota Statutes, Minnesota’s academic standards are reviewed and revised on a 10-year cycle with one content area of academic standards updated each year based on a schedule approved by the Minnesota legislature. As part of the elementary math standards review process, the District has been evaluating a number of potential district-wide core resources that will support the implementation of the new . Below are the resources that are being considered for adoption. 

The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in K-12 public schools. School districts are required to implement the standards, so all students have access to high-quality content and instruction that support proficiency towards specific knowledge or skills. As a result of the updated standards, there are notable shifts with these shifts being implemented during the 2027-2028 school year.

The required full implementation of the is scheduled for the 2027-2028 school year. Since the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) are based on the standards, the Math MCA -IV will be implemented in the spring of 2028 for grades 3-8 and 11. Implementation dates for each content area are set as part of the rulemaking process to allow flexibility for local district implementation.

Due to the math standards implementation timeline set forth by the MN Department of Education, Lakeville Area Schools’ Teaching & Learning department has been supporting teachers with the necessary standards review process of the new .  The standards review process includes engaging staff in professional learning that supports the understanding of the standards as it relates to what students need to know and do, along with the instructional shifts that align to the implementation of the new .   

The new math standards include an emphasis on conceptual understanding, thinking and reasoning in order to develop procedural fluency and flexible problem-solving strategies that connect to real world math. The standards also incorporate the eight Standards of Mathematical Practice to promote experiences that empower students to be confident in themselves as doers, knowers and sense makers of mathematics.The mathematical practices include the following:

• MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

• MP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 

• MP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 

• MP4: Model with mathematics. 

• MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically. 

• MP6: Attend to precision. 

• MP7: Look for and make use of structure. 

• MP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
